A Silent Voice Review

“A Silent Voice” is a movie that some may say is extremely underated. This is because Kyoto Animations took the big L by releasing “A Silent Voice” 6 months after “Your Name” causing it to be highly underlooked. Even though “A Silent Voice” still is widely known, by being the second most popular movie on MAL (guess who’s first) and receiving stunning reviews by several people, I… think it’s highly overrated. Now, let’s not put “A Silent Voice” immediately in the wrong here, I mean it still has a lot of good things about it and I would like to put them in here before getting into the bads of the movie. The Goods
  • Amazing Art: Pretty good art in my opinion. But you can’t expect anything less from Kyoto Animations. As a studio that has created Hyouka and Violet Evergarden, it is almost expected that the art should be amazing.
  • Amazing Ending! This was one of the things that I loved about this movie: it’s ending. It’s mainly because Ishida cried at the ending. Not even once in the entire movie did he ever cry, even when he had reason to do so. The moment when Ishida was able to look at others once again and not isolate himself into loneliness was a powerful moment.
The Bads
  • Where is the Character Development??? Like you see this person? She hasn’t even CHANGED. She literally acts the same way she was in elementary school with every single fashion. Furthermore, literally no one else develops as well. It’s such a bad story without any character development. The only person who even changed throughout the story is Ishida.
  • There are way too many unneeded characters. Like this kid said two lines in the entire story. Like who the HECK is he? He was so unneeded and yet he still showed up everywhere and even in the ending. The same with many of the other people in the show as well. There should only be like 4-5 characters in my honest opinion.
  • Nishimiya is literally a bot. She has no emotions, she doesn’t do anything. Her attempts to display emotion are absolutely pathetic. I think this was mostly the productions fault but a lack of character emotions and development in her made my rating go waaaay lower.
  • wtf are these Xs that are on peoples faces. They’re so freaking distracting. It would have been way better with their faces being shaded or something.
  • This movie is absolutely horrible at addressing real life issues. Like when Ishida’s mom threatens to burn his money when she finds out that he almost commited suicide was actually disrepectful in some regards. People aren’t going to change commiting suicide with some money!! Literally this show was done so wrong in so many aspects.
  • Ummm how can 17-18 year olds go to elementary school 5 years ago…
  • Why tf are these people stuck up about things that happened in elementary school. Like honestly I’m just a freshman and I don’t even remember elementary school like wtf.
  • ...not that good story line. Pretty self explanatory. If you just watch the movie you’ll understand.
Overall, this story is too highly rated. It should only deserve a 5/10 at most on MAL. Rating: 4/10
