I liked the plot twist but in the end i don't really like it that much. actually the best thing that happened didn't even make it into the anime i believe, it was in the novel. i would highly recommend it if you are interested in some mysterious supernatural stuff that happen in this day and age!

Why I think the First Toaru Kagaku no Railgun is pretty lame

*spoilers for Toaru Majutsu no Index and Toaru Kagaku no Railgun* Before I start, I need to make clear that everything I say in this post is merely my opinion and my take on this show. It is not professional, nor is it in any way try to shame anyone. I am just here to speak my thoughts. With that out of the way, let's get started. I recently finished watching Toaru Kagaku no Railgun. I was first introduced to this show by friends back in I believe to be 2014 or 2015, they praised this show and told me how a masterpiece it was. So, taking their advice, I watched a few episodes, but I found myself being bored out by it. I believed that it was because I was not connected to the characters, and I should finish the Index series, at least the first one, for me to enjoy this show. However, back then, I didn't have the time nor effort to invest in a monster of a show like Index, since I already have naruto, one-piece, and many more appearances on my hand. So I left it be. Now under quarantine, I have plenty of time, so I finished the first season of IndexIndex and Rail gun. It turns out that I found it not that interesting not because I wasn't connected to the character, but the fact that there are only characters in this show. No story is engaging to the viewers. However, before laying down my overall negative opinion, I must do some praising. Mikoto herself is a fascinating character; her spot as the third most powerful person in the city gave her a high potential for conflict. Which is why I found her story arc in Index is more interesting than her show (only first season, haven't watched any other) However, this is where it feels like wasted potential. Mikoto, in the first railgun, is a passive protagonist. There were two main plotlines in the story; one is the Level Upper, the other one is the laboratory. Mikoto was not part of any of this actively. What I mean by this is that she didn't actively try to get involved in the story; it just sort of happened to her. And because of her power, there is pretty much no stake. Speaking from experience, a character who does not look for plot and is way too powerful is usually a boring character. She also does not want anything, meaning nothing in her life was needed to be changed. This would work if it is a typical nIchijou anime, but it is not. We will come back to this later. Now compare this version of Mikoto to the one in the first Index, which is the complete opposite. In the first few episodes, it was established that the main protagonist, Touma, can neutralize all superpower, pretty much rendering Mikoto's power useless, therefore dragging her off of the superman position. Then, later on into the plot, we learned that she is actively trying to stop Accelerator, the number one superpowered individual in the city, from killing all her clones. (I am hugely simplifying here) She is overpowered, and yet she is still actively trying to stop the other person's action because of her belief, now this makes a compelling character, which is likely what got her a spin-off in the first place—now going back to the first rail gun. We have established the fact that the main character has no drive and is invincible, now people might say. "Well, doesn't this sound like a nichijou anime?" and they will be right. This is indeed a formula for nichijou anime where the main character does not look for anything and change anything in their life, and it would have been fine if the script stuck to this fact. For the most part, the anime is indeed a nichijo anime where we, the audience, went along the daily life of the Rail gun. However, the script didn't want this to happen; instead, what they wanted to be a combination of a nichijou anime that serves as a prequel to the Index series and at the same time be a power fantasy, it just does not work. First of all, nichijou and story arc rarely elaborate with each other. The Index universe has an enormous setting and world view that the audience is interested in. This would indeed let the audience want to learn more about it, and a nichijo anime would fit perfectly. However, you can not shove a plot into the middle of a nichijou anime and expect the audience to adapt to it. For example, the main villain of the whole anime was introduced in the last few episodes, and then she is suddenly the main baddy behind all the bad things that happened in the show. This sudden shift in tone makes no sense, especially in a nichijou anime. Secondly, a prequel is supposed to lay down information about the show and explain to the audience how everything got everywhere. Still, everything in the story has nothing to do with the main plot, and all the things that happened in this story affect the main plot in Index. That alone would have been fine if they stuck to it, in the last two episodes, it was suddenly revealed that surprise surprise, this show does affect the main plot and it is a prequel. This change made no sense and will pull the audience out of the show. Now, after criticizing it, I want to talk about the changes that could be made. I feel like if the script followed any of their plans and just went along with it, it would have been fine. Like a full-on nichijou anime (of course, in that case, 24 episodes is too much) or an all-out action-packed prequel with a THICC plot. Either one would have been better than the combination that we've got here. With that concludes why I found the first Toaru Kagaku no Railgun pretty lame.
