It´s rare for me to start writing a blog post right after I just published one. But I feel like I want to move on from the ”My summer anime picks 2019” series I started working on. Yes it´s true this will be the final one in that series. I don´t think it´s too sad actually considering people only check out my maidens in the savage season post anyhow. But overall writing these has been a new and unique experience for me and made me want to keep on writing about other stuff, feelings I want to share. And already Vinland saga is something that has been on my mind for a while, a show I placed as the highest of this season. But not because of my own entertainment, personally my favorite first episodes was probably Maidens of the savage season or The demon girl next door. However Vinland saga’s first episode gives of the impression of a real classic that is soon to be. Ps. It has now been several days since I started to write this, got busy with other stuff, mainly final fantasy 14 huehue. So with that in mind let´s go on with this post.
Being from sweden, I can´t help but familiarize with the lore and setting of the anime. And although it has been a while since I learned about vikings and such. A rush of pure nostalgia sips through my veins from watching this show. From the nordic names, to the way the characters sit around and talks reminds of classic Astrid Lindgren shows and movies like ronja and pippi. This surprises me especially considering that this is in big parts a Japanese production. They manage to hit a great tone for the setting and lore that the anime takes place in that just makes this show much more magcial.
So far the story has not done anything in particular to stand out but by all the other factors existing, this is something that has me hoping that the show will go to places that we rarely see anymore. And the crew already have tons of material to work with since the manga has been serialized since 2005. I can already tell how much care and trust goes in to this adaption from how slow the pace is. As the anime starts of with the main characters childhood and from how it looks, it seems like it take it´s sweet time in that part of the story. Similar to how the classic Berserk that covers the golden age arc. And while this may upset some vierwers, this is not something that bothers me.
It is really hard for me to say anything more about this show except that the main character´s sister is cool as a custard bun. A steamed custard bun. Smoking. But in all seriousness, it makes me happy to see a manga that does not rush itself with showing off everything that makes it good right away and instead trusts its staff and its audience to be patient, to sit back and enjoy the journey that is vinland saga.
Sorry if this is not as good as I usually write but it is pretty hard to write about my impression of the first episode, especially if I don´t want to go into spoiler territory. Of course animation and music quality is great but not worth going into detail about. Anyhow have an amazing day.
