Let me start this off by saying that I really love Kureno’s voice. I think it is wonderfully fitting. I also like how the anime art style makes him look more like Tohru than the manga art style did (and how Uotani still insists that it is just in personality that Kureno reminds her of Tohru). Though, that is true.
I was a bit worried about how the meshing of these two chapters (Ch. 48 + Ch. 50) was going to go. I worried that there may be some awkward transition or it wouldn't feel natural, but that ended up being nothing to worry about in the end. Thankfully! I think they really melded the two storylines together really well. It makes me happy. They reworked things nicely. Though, it also (interestingly) makes Tohru feel slightly more removed from Uo and Hana, which feels fitting, since we are now heading into the Beach Arc.
Though, that will probably depend on what two chapters they end up combining next week. Chapter 53 is definitely getting adapted, since that is where the quote is from, but I’m interested in seeing what other chapter they will combine it with.
Anyway, getting back to this episode...One thing I will say is that I really loved how they depicted everything with Kureno - like the scene of Kureno walking toward's Akito's room and such. This episode did a good job with building atmosphere. This is especially true for the Haunted House segment! I really think the music and sound effects really turned up the humor. I loved the music that played when Tohru was building up the courage to go into the Haunted House. I also really liked how the two horror mannequins made those screaming sounds the moment Kyo and Yuki both held out their hands to Tohru, lol. Also, the displacement of the serious music as Haru told this ridiculous (though still quite moving) story really worked for me here. The fact that the kid was depicted with the arrow in his head still also got a good laugh out of me.
As for Kureno and Arisa’s relationship, I’m not going to talk too much about it. I have my issues with it, but I don’t really have the energy for any discourse today. I will say that I do like how they changed “love” to “like.” In the TokyoPop version of the manga, they have Uo thinking, ‘He just said, “I love you,”’ and here in the subs they changed that to “I like you.” I’m not really a love at first sight kinda person, I need more slow build, so I just that some change sat better with me. I can find it more believable, personally, and I think it fits better with two people who initially find each other aesthetically attractive.
Anyway, I can really relate to Tohru's fear of haunted houses, I also don't like them. I also think that Kyo's dad friend vibes are pretty huge this episode. Kyo's a character that initially appears to be the bad boy, deliquent type, but he is really very much so a dad friend who cares about following rules, keeping things clean, having routines, and etc. Furuba's characters always feel very three dimensional and realistic in this way.
Some remaining, extra thoughts: Momiji is adorable, as always, and the rainbow that appeared behind Haru was fabulous! <3 A++, he is a Bi-con who deserves that rainbow!
