I need to give this movie credit where's it's due; the production quality is ahead of its time. It has very fluid animation and a great art style, and the soundtrack is gripping and quite unique. The story can also be given some credit, since many events create intrigue, and some of the dialogue is interesting.
But there are a lot of things that needed more clarification. The origin of those psychic powers; the mysterious things happening to Tetsuo because of them; details about World War III; reasons for people to hate their current government so much; and the story behind Kaneda's group becoming a biker gang, and their conflict with 'the Clowns'... All those things are left unexplained, leaving me behind quite underwhelmed. I also have to admit I'm not the biggest action fan, and with the excessive amount of action scenes this has, it's no surprise it wasn't able to keep my interest during all of them. It's still worth a watch, but I certainly don't think Akira is the masterpiece many make it out to be.
