I'm watching this anime subbed... On On Demand it was only available subbed, and on Kissanime I could only find the subbed version of this. Meaning I think we can all assume they never dubbed the original Gintama.

Episodes 1 & 2 are actually a TV one hour special...
According to the r/Gintama FAQ "Skip episodes 1 and 2 if you wish to. They were a special to celebrate the series getting animated."
But I am a completionist!! So I will watch them all~!!

Ohh but seriously hearing the Gintama opening sequence again after a long, long time... Omg it's really taking me back. It's almost convincing me that this is the first anime I watched on (you guessed it!) on On Demand The Anime Network as a kid!!!
I'm not entirely sure if it was really the first anime I watched on that channel. But, it's definitely one of the first.
But omg... I can't even read through the FAQ because it's soo long!! Do I really have any hope of finishing this anime though? Honestly ??? lolol

And the art looks so... outdated. Maybe it's because I've seen clips of this anime in like the windescreen aspect in 1080p on Tumblr... and it's been a while since I've seen the real original anime... No... That can't be it... I don't know. But the art in the original Gintama really didn't age well. I think when I watched this when I was younger on TV, I could have sword it looked HD, or rather HQ, is what 9 year old Shikona and YouTube back in the day would say lol
-
I think the truth is. The art just isn't good in the original Gintama.

Gintoki: "I'm getting too old to read [Shounen] Jump. It's just... there's something that draws me to it. ... Even so, it's kind of an addiction. I keep saying I'll stop after the next one."
Ah
I felt that TT____TT TT-TT
MOOoooOOOD TT____TT
Every Day describes me with animanga in general

ok this is going to bother me
The Gintama FAQ is actually really good (or the tidbits I read of it that I read anyway). Here are my favorite parts I read so far:
Should I read the manga or watch the anime? How long is the series?
The manga is good, but I prefer anime. You can tell the VAs love their roles
The argument for the manga is the art. Originally, the art for the series (both anime and manga) were very simple and weird imo. However, as the series goes along, the art significantly improves. The manga in particular is 100000x better.
Comparison: Here is a comparison between art styles of the anime [https://imgur.com/a/6qCUq] and manga [https://imgur.com/a/iT6J4] from how it used to be to how it is now.
This series looks bad. When does it get HD?
The series first goes HD 16:9 on episode 202. They were one of the last adopters of HD, and the anime even references it. There are jokes by the cast about how every other anime is in HD but they're still in 4:3.
Should I look at the wiki to get more information about the show and characters?
Absolutely NOT. If you venture into the wiki/look up characters, you risk being spoiled. Since the plot is so spread out, getting spoiled for Gintama is MUCH worse than other anime. The actual plot for Gintama is present throughout the whole series, and you won't notice until the big reveals later that seeds are being planted for the finale as far back as episode 1. The "plot" is much more spread out than other shonen, separated by episodic comedy or comedy arcs.

Yeah the art really isn't that great... I'm kind of okay with everything for the most part except for the fact that Gintoki's skintone is so... I don't know? Tacky? It's too tan to be Gintoki... Well the art is still very strange to me idk
I'd like to think of it more as like... saturated and vibrant which should bring up nostalgic feelings for me, because Naruto FMA Furuba... They all had that same saturated 4:3 look Gintama has too.
But ugh yeah I still can't really stand the art in this though. The art aged horribly tbh But fortunately, the jokes have remained timeless! And that's all that matters... kind of lol
Though I think as I got older, the jokes make more sense. I remember when I was watching this when I was a kid, I think I thought the jokes were funny, but I don't remember laughing out loud at any of them... Maybe I did though. But I can't remember laughing out loud at them. Like as I got older, I actually get the jokes now... I laughed so hard at that machination joke they had there lol So yeah actually if anything the jokes got funnier as time passed throughout my life idk but that could just be me? lol

"Episode 2"
I think the art massively improved... O.o
Either that or my eyes adjusted to the terrible art and I can tolerate it now I have no idea which one is the case here tbh lol

Gintoki (to Kentoken (sp?)): "If you want things to change, you have to change yourself first!"
Words of wisdom.

I have to admit though. It's funny, depressing, hilarious, intriguing, impressive, and interesting that
THIS ANIME'S FIRST TWO EPISODES ARE PURE FILLER LOLOLOL
